Democracy Summer 2001

The Florida election scandal was an intense civics lesson for everyone in the U.S. Though our government is held up worldwide as a model of democracy, citizens are disenfranchised by electoral systems that entrench injustice and inequality. The will of the people is subverted by a system dominated by Big Money and exclusionary practices. The best thing we can do with our anger is to organize for change. Democracy Summer 2001 is the coming-out party of a diverse, multi-ethnic young people’s movement that will give us back the reins of power over our own lives. First: a weeklong Democracy Institute on democratic reform and organizing skills. The Institute is in Florida – Ground Zero of the new movement for electoral justice, from June 17-23, 2001. Then: Following the Institute, participants will have the opportunity to spend time working with on-the-ground projects and campaigns on electoral reform in Florida and elsewhere. Internships can last from one week to eight, depending on your interest and availability. Let’s kick-start a new movement for real democracy in the United States! The Democracy Summer promotional brochure is now available in .pdf format.
